Following with Halloween theme I thought about horror books.

I've read quite a few and I still don't know why as I cannot see that type of movies and I get scared  easily in real life.

When I was young I didn't read as much as I read now.  One of the reasons is that I couldn't find books that caught my interest.  But this type of books caught my interest allright.  The first books where of course, Dracula and Frankestein.  I didn't find Frankestein scary on the contrary I felt pity for the monster and for his life.  Dracula was the begining of my interest in vampires.

After these I discovered Stephen King.  I think because it was the time they made all his movies such as Carrie or Cujo.  I read lots of Stephen King books.  For me Pet Cementery was the scariest of all.

The first books I read in English were James Herbert's books.  I think I discovered him the first time I went to England.  Again, I've read lots of his books and at that time I liked them better than Stephen King.

Of course the scariest of all books for me was "The Exorcist".  I haven't been abled to seeing the movie but the book I have read.  When I went to the States and made a trip to Georgetown in Washington, we visited the place (stairs and house) were the movie was filmed.

When I was in my twenties, some neighbourghs of an american friend I had, came to visit to Málaga and she was reading two books that she told me they were really good. They went back to their home and she sent those two books to me.  One was Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child and the other one was "All that remains" by Patricia Cornwell.  Since then I became a Pendergast fan and I've read most of all books by Preston and Child.  I love their books.  I also discovered Scarpetta serie by Patricia Cornwell.  Now with CSI the forensic thing is very common but it wasn't so back then.  Scarpetta had to find clues through her forensic work in order to stop serial killers.  And these serial killers where really scary.  I've read most of her books until the 13th or so.  Then I lost interest.  I would like to start reading her books again but I cannot find the time.

Some years back, and I think thanks to Amazon that tells you other books you can find interesting I found Charlaine Harris and Laurell K Hamilton.  I know Charlaine Harris is now superfamous thanks to True Blood, but I do really recommend her books as they are so much better that the tv show.  In fact, I try watching the show and had to stop because it was going to ruin the books for me.  I prefer her vision of the characters better than the ones on the tv-show.   Again, I've read all her Sookie books.  I've read all Anita's Blake books by Laurell K Hamilton but the good ones are from the first to the eight book or so.  After that they are more or less all the same and not really good.  But the first books were really good.  Lots of zombies, vampires (scary-bad vampires), werewolfs.. and Anita Blake was a very strong character.

I am also reading now teenager series such as Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine.  I love this serie, lots of vampires, lost of action, Myrnin ... etc.  Kelley Armstrong "Darkest Power" triology is good too.

And if one wants to have fun and laugh nothing like the first books of Undead series by MaryJanice Davidson.

Well thess are some of the books.  From the scariest to the less.  I don't read horror anymore because I need to sleep at night and I cannot spend a night sleepless if I have to go to work in the morning.  Anyway I think real life is most of the times scary enough to add anything else to it.

Cementerios

Being Halloween I thought this post could be interesting.  If you don't like to read about it feel free to jump to the post below about what I have eaten this weekend.

When I travel sometimes I visit cemeteries.  It is part of the culture of a country.  They are peaceful places and I like to see how people take care of their beloved tombs.

Last year we went to Paris.  The first cementery is near Montmartre.  It is really big and old. So old that you can see that they had to build around and over it.  Cars go over the tombs.   We walked a bit until I "decided" that I have seen enough.  Sometimes they say that when you take photos and there are spheres in them they are something else and not an effect of the light and the camera.  I have few photos in Paris with spheres. One is in the last photo of this cementery in Paris.  You can see it in the door of the third mausoleum on the left.  I had also spheres in photo of the Opera of Paris.  The Phantom of the Opera ??!!

Of course the biggest "tomb or mausoleum" in Paris is Napoleon's.  The builing is magnificent and impresive.  I like the angels around the tomb.

Then there's Glendalough in Ireland. Very, very old.

And the last pictures are from Switzerland, first one is Gruyere (like the cheese) and the last one is in Luzern.

This has been my food for the weekend.

I made some soup with chickpeas, spinach, carrots, garlic and paprica (both types).  I love this type of food for winter.

I have pastry left in the fridge and I made this tartalettes.  I put some fresh cream, marinated salmon (I bought it) and onion. 10 minutes in the oven and it is ready.

And last, some fruit salad.  I like making this because you do it once and then all you have to do is serve yourself.  This has pear, orange, apple, pomegranate and grapefruit, orange and lemon juice.

Estuvo 30 minutos a 250º y 20 a 220º.
Aquí está el resultado.

This is the bread for this weekend.  This week I really did have little time to bake.  I've left for work at 7:15 a.m and have come back between 8 and 9 p.m..

On Wednesday evening I mixed a spoon of rye brown leaven (or sourdough) with 100 gr rye brown flour and 100 gr water and left the bowl cover in the kitchen the whole night.

Yesterday morning, before going to work, I put in the same bowl, 350 gr water, 50 gr wholewheat flour (what was left), 150 rye flour, 300 gr wheat flour, seeds and 10 gr. salt.  Mixed well, covered and put it in the fridge.

Yesterday evening when I arrived home, I put the oven on 250ºC, took the dough from the fridge and shape the bread when the dough was still cold (normally I would have left it until the dough was at room tempeture but I was tired and it was late). After 20-30 minutes I put some ices in the oven (to create some steam) and introduce the dough into the oven.

The dough was 30 minutes at 250ºC and 20 minutes at 220º.  Here it is the result.

This is my weekend.  On saturday morning first thing I did was some breakfast squares and some cereal snacks.  After that I went to my parents and with my sister spent the day babysitting my niece and nephew.  My niece will be two years old this week and my nephew is three and a half.  It was nice being with them as they lived abroad and we don't seen as often as we would like.  We played with some lego and with an electric train.  My father gave the train as a present to my brother when he was six or seven years old.  My nephew is so happy with it.

On Sunday afternoon we had a family reunion in my cousin's home, with her parents, my parents, my brother and his family and my sister and me.  I love family reunions like this one.  It is really a nice way to be on a Sunday afternoon.  As you can see my cousin, Nuria (lalibelula3.blogspot.com) set a really long table. Thank-you very much, cousin Nuria.

This building is right in front of one of the sides of the Cathedral.  I don't know anything about it but I find it interesting.

The other day was my mother's birthday.  I didn't give her any presents at all.  I hadn't had time so I told her that we would buy her whatever she wanted.

On Friday afternoon I hadn't plann anything and I had had a horrible day at work, and just by chance I bought handles for a bag.  When I got home I took the fabrics that I had cut on Monday afternoon and began with the bag.

For quite sometime I wanted to try and make a bag like the one in Tilda's book.  I looked at the pictures and I got the idea of how to make the pattern but I didn't follow the instructions in the book because I couldn't understand them (and it is not because they are in English).

This is the second time I use the sewing machine and as I had said before I don't sew very well.  But I started and did it as I could and here is the result.  I am really happy with it.  In the end it came out much better than I had expected.   My mother liked it as well and she did expect something after talking with me on the phone on Friday evening, but nothing like this.

I crocheted the flower following Lucy's (from Attic24) tutorial.  She explained it so good that this is the first time I crochetet a flower and I didn't have any trouble at all.  So from this blog, thanks Lucy for your tutorials I am learning a lot from them.

This is the bread I baked on Friday evening.  It was my bread for the weekend.  I had a bit of a problem but in the end the bread came out pretty good.  For me it is the perfect bread to eat with olive oil as breakfast.

This is one of the breads for this weekend.  This is for my family, half will be for my parents and sister and half for my brother and his family.  Mine is now in the fridge and I will bake it tomorrow evening.

The ingredients are:  300 gr leaven or sourdough (I never know the exact term), 490 gr water, 15 gr salt and 700 flour (there is some rye and some white flour, both organic).

Yesterday evening I put in a bowl 100 gr. of leaven and 100 gr of brown rye and 100 gr of water.  I mixed everything and let the bowl covered on the counter in the kitchen.  This morning at around 6:30 am, after taking the batch of yogurt out of the oven, I noticed the leaven was at it best.  So I mixed it with the rest of ingredients.  Goes without saying that I almost got late to work.  My only concern during the rest of the day was if I had put the dough in the fridge or if I had let it on the counter.  At the end, when I had arrived home this evening at 18:30 I was grateful to see that I had put it inside the fridge.

I took the dough out of the fridge and let it warm a bit before shaping the bread.  I've lost track of time the moment I phone one of my cousins.  I was talking to her until my phone didn't have more battery.  So I shaped when I thought it was Ok, let it rest for a bit and then put it inside the oven (after cutting it) when the oven was at 250º C.  I also put some ice on the bottom of the oven to create steam.  The bread was 30 minutes at 250º C, then 20 minutes at 220ºC and 10 minutes with the oven out.

Right now it is cooling on a wire rack.

As I write this post I have become aware that tomorrow I have to carry this bread to work (I have to go by bus because my sister has my car) and until 15:30 it won't reach it final destination. This bread weights about 1,3 kilo more or less.

I have on the table right beside me "The handmade loaf" by Dan Lepard which is helping me with some "bread vocabulary".

Today is my mother's birthday and apart from being healthy (most important!!) we are all here in Malaga, daughters, son, daughter in law and grandchildren.  It is also my godfather birthday.  Happy Birthday to both of them!!

 Ana.

One month with my blog. And I think it is going well.
I get worry that I won’t have anything to tell. Other times I have a lot to tell.  I know this is normal and I think I should have a notebook around to write ideas down.
Going around Málaga with my camera means that I am rediscovering my city and I do like very much what I am seeing through it.  This blog is like my photo album.  I also like this when I visit other blogs, you get to see a bit of the world without leaving your home and it is also very interesting to see it through other people’s eyes.
As you can see with my blog I am using it as my book recipe.  This is quite useful because sometimes you do a certain recipe a lot and then you stop.  And when you want to do it again you don’t remember how you did them or where you wrote them.
I know most people don’t care much about bread but for me it is important as I never make the same bread.  I need to know how a certain combination of flours works best, the amount of water I put and if I have to correct something the next time.  I have some easy bread recipes that work with yeast but I need time to make them and put them in the blog.
When I open my blog I was really worried about having enough time for it.  So far I think I’ve managed.  I am aware too that in the future I will do better and I will do worse. At least by now I have quite few entries and I am very happy with this.
Regarding my English, I have my days. I have days when I am really fluent and others when I am not.  Although I read a lot in English and I understand everything for the most part, it is quite different when you have to write it.   In general I do better when I write thinking in English than when I am trying to translate from what I wrote in Spanish. I know I have to correct some English entries because I have already seen some mistakes. I do hope to improve with time and practice.
Anyway, the most important thing about this blog is that I am enjoying it a lot.

Crochet: manta a cuadros (continuación)

This is taking longer than I thought.  The main reasons are that I have more proyects apart from this one and this month I don't have as much time as I would like because of the family visiting us as well.  So it is going really slow.   Anyway I like to see all the squares forming a rainbow of colours.  The most difficult part for me is combining colours and after that combining squares for the blanket.

I have always liked this type of basket and on Saturday I finally bought this one.  As you can see in the picture I am using it to put all that red yarn I bought for a blanket that I have already started.
