Este es nuestro viaje anual a Londres. Mi hermana y yo llevamos más de 10 años viajando a Londres una vez al año. Casi siempre vamos en las mismas fechas entre mediados de Noviembre principios de Diciembre.
28 Noviembre
Ultimamente volamos con Easyjet al aeropuerto de Gatwick. Es un vuelo directo que hay desde Málaga. Esta vez tuvimos mucha suerte porque fue todo bastante bien y no tuvimos retrasos ni nada. Una vez que llegamos al aeropuerto cogemos un tren para Londres. No, no es el Gatwick Express. Tomamos el tren de la Compañía First Capital Connect en dirección a Bedford y que para en London Bridge. Aquí cambiamos de tren (no tarda ni un minuto y es en el mismo anden y todo) y cogemos uno de la compañía Southerneastern en dirección a la estación de Londres London Charing Cross. El viaje en total dura unos 40 - 45 minutos desde Gatwick y el billete nos ha costado (ida y vuelta) casi 30 €. London Charing Cross es nuestra parada final ya que está debajo del hotel.
El hotel. Pondré otra entrada después de ésta con los detalles del hotel. Sólo decir que aunque llevamos yendo allí unos diez años no lo puedo recomendar.
Una vez que tenemos la habitación y hemos dejado las maletas el siguiente paso es comer. Esto es una cosa muy buena que tiene Londres, se puede comer a cualquier hora. Nosotras cruzamos enfrente del hotel a un Pizza Express donde no se come nada mal.
Con las pilas cargadas lo siguiente que hiciemos fue darnos un paseo por Covent Garden y sus alrededores. Nos tomamos unos macaroons en Laduree en Convent Garden, entreamos en la Royal Opera House por si quedaban entradas (había pero eran las más caras). Y buscamos y encontramos la tienda de Cath Kingston cerca de allí.
29 Noviembre.
Lo primero que hiciemos fue desayunar. Desayuno inglés que es lo que sirven en el hotel. Yo tomé porridge (avena), huevo, bacon, salchichas y tostadas. El resto de los días no he comido tanto desayuno inglés, sólo el porridge (por aquello de la fibra) y las tostadas y el café.
No teníamos planeado hacer tantas compras pero en el momento que llegamos a Regent Street fue una locura. Además era bastante temprano y no había todavía mucha gente ni en la calle ni en las tiendas. En Hamleys compramos dos perritos de peluches monísimos para mis sobrinos. En Liberty me fuí directamente a la zona de lanas, costuras y manualidades de ese tipo. Impresionante el colorido de lanas que hay y la de chismes para hacer punto o coser. Buscando en internet sobre donde comprar lanas y cosas para hacer punto encontré que había bastantes cosas en John Lewis. No nos defraudó. Creo que no habíamos entrado nunca pero a partir de ahora siempre que vaya visita obligada. Impresionante también el surtido de todo lo relacionado con la costura, crochet, punto, lanas y manualidades que tienen en, creo, la cuarta planta. Al supermercado (Waitrose) fuimos también otro día y da gusto ver lo que tienen. Mi hermana se quedó en la tercera planta donde estaban adornos y todo lo relacionado con la Navidad. Estaba encantada de todo lo que había de bolsas de regalos, tarjetas y decoración en general.
No comimos. Tomamos el té en Harrods. Empieza a las tres de la tarde. Normalmente lo suyo es reservar pero como era martes no tuvimos problemas. Hace años cuando lo descubrimos nos llamó la atención que la gente se dejara los dulcecitos de la última bandeja (la más alta de las tres que ponen). Cuando lo probamos entendimos el porqué. Cuando llegas a esa bandejita ya está uno lleno y no puede comer más. Para los que no lo sepan se puede repetir sandwiches o lo que se quiera. Este té no es barato pero los hay por todo Londres más baratos e igual de bueno.
Mi hermana leyó en algún sitio que este año el "Winter Wonderland" en Hyde Park era el más grande de Europa. Debe ser verdad. Fuimos hace un par de años y eran cuatro casetas y alguna atracción en Hyde Park. Este año hay un mercado navideño en condiciones, muchas casetas para comer y muchas atracciones de feria. Hay también una pista de patinaje sobre hielo. No quiero ni pensar como tiene que estar de gente un día de fin de semana. El martes por la tarde-noche estaba a tope.
30 Noviembre.
Bath. Haré esta semana una entrada sobre Bath.
1 Diciembre.
Por la mañana estuvimos por Oxford Street viendo Selfridges y John Lewis otra vez. A mediodía después de dejar las compras en el hotel cogimos un autobús y fuimos a Borough Market. Otras veces hemos ido en Sábado, pero el jueves es una gloria porque no había mucha gente y se podían ver todos los puestos muy bien. Compré dos botes de mermeladas que me habían recomendado.
De vuelta paramos en la Modern Tate para tomar algo. En el último piso, creo que el 7, hay un bar y un restauante. Tomamos un té y algo de comer. Lo mejor las vistas. Ya era de noche y estaban todas los edificios de oficinas y la Catedral de St Paul iluminados. Muy bonito.
La tarde se puso lluviosa, un rollo por el tema de ir con el paraguas entre tanta gente. Con todo, nos acercamos hasta Trafalgar Square donde encendían las luces del arbol de navidad. Después dimos una vuela por el barrio de Seven Dials (que está al lado de Trafalgar Square).
2 Diciembre.
Lo primero que hicimos es entregar las llaves de la habitación. Lo segundo es tener unas palabras con el recepcionista ya que la noche anterior no me pude dormir hasta pasadas las una de la mañana cuando terminó una fiesta que había en el hotel. Me quejé la misma noche, porque la música estaba bastante alta y todo lo que me dijeron es que le dirían al DJ que bajase la música ¿?. No la bajó.
Después fuimos a la Abadía de Westminster. Es la primera vez que la visito. Siempre que hemos intentado entrar había una cola enorme y lo hemos dejado para otra. Esta vez nos fuimos bien tempranito y la pudimos ver. Me gusto pero me llamó la atención la cantidad de tumbas que hay dentro de la Iglesia.
De vuelta, vimos el cambio de la Guardia.
En el Café de la National Gallery comimos antes de ir al aeropuerto. Se come muy bien y de precio no está nada mal. Yo pedí un estofado que estaba bien picantito, con el estofado me dieron dos rebanadas de pan enormes y muy buenas y para postre compré una tarta de limón que estaba riquísima.
De aquí recogimos las maletas. Cogimos los dos trenes hasta Gatwick y en Gatwick el avión a Málaga. Tuvimos ciertos problemas en el tren a Gatwick, paró un par de veces, y en el avión estuvimos un buen rato esperando a que saliera a pista. Y luego la caradura de la gente que esperando a montanos en el avión se cuelan. Lo mejor es la explicación. Habiendo una cola, bien larga, se cuelan porque la cola no está bien formada y no saben muy bien donde hay que ponerse !¡. La que me dió la explicación era española. No se si es que era tonta o más lista de la cuenta (creo que lo último).
Bueno, el viaje a parte de estos últimos incidentes no ha estado mal. Londre en particular y Gran Bretaña en general me siguen gustando muchísimo. Me gusta ver los edificios, los parques, los museos y por supuerto, las tiendas. ¿Volveré?. No lo sé. La verdad es que cada vez me cuesta más viajar. Me cansa y me aburre mucho toda la preparación que conllevan. Reconozco también que los pequeños contratiempos que tiene un viaje y las aglomeraciones de gente me molestan cada vez más. Por otro lado, en casa se está tan bién. Me encanta estar en mi casa. Durante la semana no paso mucho tiempo en ella y me gusta estar allí cuando tengo tiempo y hacer lo que más me gusta que es cocinar, hacer punto o crochet y descansar en general. Está claro que me hago mayor y la verdad es que no me importa nada. Hogar duce hogar.
This is our annual trip to London. My sister and I have been making this trip for more than 10 years. More or less in the same dates that is between the middle of November to the begining of December.
28 November
As always we flew with Easyjet to Gatwick with a direct flight from Malaga. This time we were really lucky and didnt' have any troubles with the plane. No delays at all. Once we arrived to Gatwick we took the train to London. We don't take the Gatwick Express, instead we have learnt over the years to take the train (First Capital Connect direction Bedford) to London Bridge where we change trains and take the one going to London Charing Cross Station (usually Southerneastern). It takes about 45 minutes from Gatwick Airport to reach London Charing Cross and we paid 25 pounds (more or less 30 €) for the return ticket: Gatwick Airport to all London Terminals. For us is the most convienient way to get to our hotel.
Our hotel. We stayed in Guoman Charing Cross Hotel. This I will explain in more detail in another post. Although I've been going there for ten years I am afraid I cannot recommend it.
After checking in and leaving our luggage in our hotel room, we first have a late lunch or a early dinner in front of the hote in Pizza Express. This is one of the nice things about London, you can eat at anytime.
When we were finish we went for a walk around Covent Garden. It was really nice as it wasn't raining and wasn't that cold. We had a macaroon from Laduree, we went inside the Royal Opera House to see if there were tickets left (there were but the most expensive ones), we found Cath Kingston shop.
29 November
First of all, we had breakfast at the hotel. English breakfast. I had porridge, some toasts, sausages, bacon and eggs. And coffee. My sister did have tea.
This day we went shopping for the most part. It was not our intention but we did found lots of nice things. In the morning we went to Regent Street. In Hamleys we bought two very pretty and tiny soft dogs for my niece and newphew. At Liberty I went to see all Rowan yarns, bottoms and everything they have to knit, sew ... etc. I must say that last year after visiting this part of Liberty was when I started knitting again. They have such beautifuls yarn. All those colours. Next stop before lunch was John Lewis. I have read in internet that they have a nice selection of yarns, fabrics, needles ... so I made sure to visit it. I was not disappointed at what I found. They have such a big selection of everything you might need to sew, crochet and knit. My sister visited the Christmas decoration section and she was amazed as well. We had never visit John Lewis before but now is in our list for other trips.
We didn't have lunch, we did have tea at Harrods. It is at 3 pm. Usually it is better to make a reservation but being a Thusday we didn't have any trouble. This is not the first time we have tea there. I still remember the first time we went that we were surprise because people didn't finish the small cakes at the top the the tray. Now we know. Once you get to the top tray you are already full and cannot eat anymore. I love sconnes with cream and jam. Sandwich are good to but I missed the cucumber one and the egg one this time. If anyone doesn't know it, you can ask for more sandwiches or more scones.
Our next stop after Harrods was Hyde Park. My sister had read that this year Winter Wonderland was bigger that years before. It sure was. A big Christmas market, lots of places to eat, quite few attractions and I must say lots of people. I cannot imagine what it must be like on a weekend.
30th November

1st December
In the morning we went to Oxford Street. We visited Selfridge and John Lewis. In the afternoon we went to Borough Market. It was quite nice to see it with not so many people as on a Saturday. I bought some jams, once with Rubard and the other with dawson. You cannot find both fruits here in Málaga. On the way back we stopped in Modern Tate to have tea and something to eat. We went to the restaurant in 7th stock. It was already dark outside and the view from there was incredible. St. Paul and all office buildings were light up. The weather by then was not nice at all as it was raining. Anyway we went back to Trafalgar Square to see the lights in the Christmas tree and then around Seven Dials area.
2nd December
First of all we checked out from hotel and I had a few words with one of the receptionist as I couldn't sleep the night before, because there was a party in the hotel and I had to hear loud music until it finished at one o'clock in the morning !!.
Then we went to visit Westminster Abbey. It is the first time I visited it. Everytime I tried to visit it I couldn't because of the long queue. This time we made sure to go early and we had no trouble at all. I liked it but was surprise at how many tombs are inside the church. Returning from Westminster Abbey we got to see the Changing of the guards by chance. We had some lunch in National Gallery Cafe. It was quite nice eating there. I had some stew, some bread and a lemon tart, all delicious and not too expensive.
After eating, it was time to take our luggage from hotel and go to the airport. We had some delays on the train towards Gatwick Airport, and again once we were seating on the plane we had to wait a bit too. It is amazing some people who jumped the queue when we were boarding the plane, one girl told me that the queue was not well done and she didn't know where to go, so as it was not clear enough for her (the queue was a long one) it was OK to jump it. Increadible !!
Apart from this last incidents the trip was quite allright. I still find London and Great Britain quite amazing. I love buildings, parks, museum and of course, shops. I don't know if I will go back. I am finding myself quite tired and bored with travels arrangements. And the other thing is that, because I don't spend as much time as I would like at home I always look foward to staying home doing things I like most such as cooking, doing some crochet and enjoying and resting in general. I must be getting old, and no, it doesn't bother me at all. As they say: No place like home.
