Today is July 16th and in Spain is a very special day for the people who live in the coasts, today is the day of "La Virgen del Carmen" (Virgin Carmen) which is the patron of fishermen in Spain.  In Malaga is a very special day and in some neighbourhoods as "El Palo" or "Pedragalejo" is even more a special day because these are fishermen neighbourhoods with a lot of traditions.  These photos are from "El Palo" in Málaga. In the procession there is the band, all in white, then children and adults dressed as "marengos" and after them the image of Virgin Carmen.  It is really very beautiful to see.

These are some of the things I did last week:  bread and inverted sugar syrup.  Well I baked a chocolate cake as well but the photo was not so good so as I will probably bake one again soon (it was quite delicious) next time I will try to post it.

The first loaf you can see is the sourdough (or leaven) bread I baked last week.  It has only two tablespoon of sourdough for 500 gr flour (200 gr wholemeal spelt flour and 300 gr strong flour), 350 gr water and 10 gr of salt.  It is too hot and the bread doesn't need anymore to rise.

I did some rolls like chapatas using the al'ancienne technic.  The thing is that for 500 gr flour (normal not strong flour) you put 400 gr ice water or very cold water (I used water from the fridge), a teaspoon of dried yeast and 10 gr of salt.  You have to mixed all ingredients as fast as you can, cover the dough and put it in the fridge for a day or two (it can be there even three days).  The dough for this bread was there two days.  Shaping the rolls is a bit of a problem because the dough is quite wet so you have to use some flour to make the rolls.  Then you leave the rolls for an hour or less (depending how warm your kitchen is) and after that you bake it for 20 minutes or until the rolls are a bit brown.  As I say they are like chapatas and they are really good if you toast them a bit before eating.

The last thing I have done last week is inverted sugar syrup.  I use this sugar syrup to make icecream because it prevents crystal ice from forming.  It can be used for cakes or for other things too.  It is not difficult to make but you need to pay attention to temperatures and so.

Chal terminado.

He aquí el resultado.  La modelo es mi hermana.

A week or so ago I was able to finish this shawl.  I love how it turned out.  This one is for my sister but I will probably crochet another one for myself because it is perfect to have it around in autumn or in winter.

This is my new cover for my sewing machine.  I've been meaning to sew this cover for a long time but until now I haven't been able to do it.  This sewing machine is very special to me because my mother bought it for me as a birthday present two years ago.  It is her last birthday present she gave me because last year she wasn't well for my birthday.  I think it is really a good present.

Well I have bought the fabric like two years ago.  It is the same fabric that is used to make flamenca dresses.  I don't know much about sewing and I still had to learn more how to use the sewing machine but I think this cover has come out really nice.

I just don't know why lately I cannot find enough time to do everything I want to do.  I've been wanting to bake some muffins for a while.  Last Thursday I have a bit of time and I looked and I had all the ingredients I need for baking muffins.  I baked banana and chocolate chips muffins.  Delicious.  I used more or less the same recipe I use for every muffin I make:  Rita's recipe.  The ingredients for these muffins are:  83 gr olive oil, 83 gr buttermilk (milk just works the same), 130 gr brown sugar, one egg, 200 gr. flour, a teaspoon of baking soda, two bananas (smashed) and some bitter chocolate chips.  Oven at 180ºC for 20 minutes or so.  Really they are very good and I will probably will repeting them soon.

Then in el Foro del Pan (is a Spanish forum about bread and so) my friend MMF published recently a cheese and ham cake recipe (I don't know how to translate this kind of cake).  It is a cake but without sugar and with salt and cheese and some ham.  The recipe is really simple and I wanted to try it.  I did some muffins instead just changing the baking powder for baking soda.  I did like the result but I will make the cake next time because I think it will probably much better.  The muffins were anyway really good.

Nueva York (New York) - Día 5

Our 5th day in New York the first thing we did was visit Columbia University.  My sister wanted a long time ago to visit it but the other times we have been to Newy York we never seemed to find the time to go and visit it.  This time we made an effort and go there.  The thing was that when we arrived there it was raining a lot and we had to take shelter in one of the main buildings and wait a bit. We tried to go into the Library (big building you can see in one of the pictures) but we were reminded (not very nicely I must add) that Columbia Univerity is a private University and one cannot walk around like that.  If we wanted to visit the library we had to go to the "visitor center" (??) and go with the tour.  I just don't know why they don't put a warning outside the building with this information so we could avoid this.  It was really unpleasant.  We went to the visitor's center and were told that for the next tour we had to wait for an hour.  We left and the truth is that I didn't feel like visiting the library again.

After that we took the underground and wen't all the way down to Battery Park.  There we walked around, took some pictures, visited the Financial Center and the memorial they had built were the twin towers used to be.

Last picture is from Friday and it was Flagsday or something like that, and that was why there were so many USA flags around the Rockefeller Center.

My cousin came to pick us and we stayed with him and his family for the weekend in Washington that is where they lived.

We have enjoyed this trip a lot and we wouldn't mind repeting it any time.
